V830 Tauri b is a Hot Jupiter extrasolar planet orbiting the very young T Tauri star V830 Tauri, located around 427 light years (131 parsecs) away from Earth in the constellation of Taurus. The planet is notable as it has an extremely young age, around 2 million years old, one of the youngest discovered so far.

Characteristics[]

Orbit and mass[]

V830 Tauri b takes about 4.93 earth days to complete an orbit around its host star, at a distance of about 0.057 AU. This is around 7 times closer than Mercury orbits the Sun. The mass is around 77% that of the planet Jupiter. It is classified as a Hot Jupiter planet.

Host star and age[]

The host star is V830 Tauri, a T Tauri star that is about the same size of the Sun but with twice the radius. The star has a surface temperature of about 4250 K. The Sun's surface temperature is 5778 K for comparison. The star's estimated age is about 2 million years, which makes it a very young star. For another comparison, the Sun's age is 4.6 billion years. The star has not fully contracted yet to become a main-sequence star, which ties into its bloated radius but similar mass to the Sun. Given its mass it will likely be on the main-sequence portion of its lifetime for about 10 billion years like the Sun.
