NGC 290

NGC 290, an example of an open cluster of stars

A star cluster is, as the name implies, a large group of stars. Two examples of star clusters are globular clusters and open clusters. Globular clusters are defined as a tight group of hundreds to millions of old stars which are gravitationally bound, while open clusters are more loosely grouped and generally contain fewer than a few hundred stars, and are often young.
