The Needle Galaxy (also known as NGC 4565 and Caldwell 38) is an edge-on spiral galaxy approximately 50 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Coma Berenices.

Characteristics[]

NGC 4565 has at least two satellite galaxies, one of which is interacting with it. It has a population of roughly 240 globular clusters, more than the Milky Way.

NGC 4565 is one of the brightest member galaxies of the Coma I Group, in fact it even outshines the Andromeda Galaxy is terms of luminosity.

Observing NGC 4565[]

NGC 4565 can be found east of the large open cluster Melotte 111. The galaxy itself is also within close proximity of the North Galactic Pole which also resides in Coma Berenicies.
