The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent agency of the United States federal government, responsible for its civil space program and conducting aeronautical science and space science research. It was established on July 29, 1958 after President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, and it began operations in October of that same year, replacing its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).
