NGC 6744 is a intermediate spiral galaxy located 30 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of Pavo. The galaxy is considered a "Milky Way twin" as it resembles our galaxy in many ways. Like the Milky Way, it has a prominent central region packed with old yellow stars, whereas further away from the galactic core, there are dusty spiral arms painted in shades of pink and blue. The galaxy appears to be quite active and very lively.

NGC 6744 is not a perfect clone of the Milky Way; it is slightly larger, measuring more than 200,000 light years across, compared to the estimated 100,000 light years for the Milky Way.

The galaxy was discovered by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop on June 30, 1826 in Australia. The galaxy lies within the Virgo Supercluster.

Supernova[]

One supernova has been detected in NGC 6744. The supernova, named SN 2005at, was detected in 2005. It was a type Ic supernova.
