Galileo Galilei was an astronomer in the 16th and 17th century. He discovered all four Galilean Moons around Jupiter, making them the first bodies discovered orbiting a planet other than the Earth. He was a big supporter of the Copernican Revolution and was one of the few people at the time who believed the Sun was the center of the Solar System. He also discovered the Rings of Saturn, and thought it was Saturn’s ears. He was put under house arrest by Pope Urban VIII for violating the beliefs of the Catholic Church. He died in house arrest on January 8, 1642 when he was 77. He is today well known for discovering the Galilean moons and supporting Copernicus’s model of the Solar System.
