101955 Bennu, also simply designated as Bennu, is a carbonaceous asteroid found in the Apollo group. It was discovered by the LINEAR project on September 11th, 1999. As a potentially hazardous object, it has a 1-in-1,800 chance of impacting Earth between 2178 and 2290 (with the greatest risk being on September 24th, 2182). It is named after Bennu, the Ancient Egyptian mythological bird associated with the Sun, creation, and rebirth. Bennu has a mean diameter of 490 meters (1,610 feet).


Bennu is/was the primary target of the OSIRIS-REx mission which will bring back samples from the asteroid in 2023 after landing on the asteroid in 2020.
