16 Cygni Bb is an extrasolar planet located approximately 69 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Cygnus. This planet was discovered in 1996 orbiting the Sun-like star 16 Cygni B, one of two solar-mass components of the triple star system 16 Cygni. It completes an orbit every 799 days. It was the first Eccentric Jupiter discovered, and the second confirmed to be orbiting a Sun-like star; after 51 Pegasi b. The planet is abundant in lithium.
Discovery[]
In October 1996, scientists discovered a planetary-mass companion near Cygnus 16B, with a mass of at least 1.68 times that of Jupiter. At the time of its discovery, it had the highest eccentric orbit of any known planet. Scientists discovered the planet by measuring the star's radial velocity.
